Next Generation Grants

Overview

Next Generation Awards support postdoctoral fellows at SD CFAR member institutions, including those funded through T32, D43, and R25 mechanisms. Eligible applicants must be actively preparing to submit a Career Development Award (CDA). These grants, up to a maximum of $10,000, are intended to support specific projects designed to generate preliminary data that will strengthen planned CDA applications. The funding period is one year from the date of award.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the annual funding allocation is exhausted, after which new awards will be paused until the start of the next SD CFAR fiscal year—so early submission is strongly encouraged.

Eligible applicants are postdoctoral fellows at SD CFAR member institutions who are actively preparing to apply for a Career Development Award (CDA).

A Letter of Support is required from your CDA mentor. You’ll upload this letter in the last step of your online application.

Applications are submitted through REDCap. You may start your online application, receive a personalized link, and return to complete your application at any time leading up to the due date.

Include your CDA mentor’s letter of support in the last step of the online application.

Evaluation Process

Applications for Next Generation grants are evaluated by qualified experts from the SD CFAR member institution community, who provide high-level feedback on each submission. All materials, including reviewer evaluations, are subsequently considered by the Developmental Grant Review Committee, which makes funding recommendations to the Operations Committee based on scientific merit and programmatic priorities. Final award decisions are subject to the availability of funds.

Notification
Applicants are typically notified of the Core’s decision within four weeks following the submission deadline. The decision notice includes written critiques prepared by the reviewers; reviewer identities are not disclosed. These critiques are intended to provide constructive feedback to help applicants strengthen their proposals, regardless of the funding outcome.
